Study Skills: Referencing

Tips and tricks to help you be an even better student

Referencing tile

Referencing and citation is the process of clearly and consistently acknowledging all the sources of information you have used to write your assignment or essay. There are two parts to this:

  1. Providing citations in your essay/assignment where you've quoted or paraphrased someone else's words or ideas. This is called "In Text Citation"
  2. Providing a reference list or bibliography at the end of your essay/assignment

There are many different citation styles including Harvard, APA6, MLA, Chicago. Sometimes you will be expected to use a specific style (this is common at university) otherwise you are free to choose the style you prefer. The differences between the styles can be subtle but the most important thing is that you use one style consistently. Most KDS teachers prefer APA6.

There are add-ons for Google Drive to help with referencing or you could use a product like Cite This For Me, Endnote, Zotero or Mendeley. Some of these programs have extensions for Chrome to make creating citations even easier. Scroll down for more information.
